Berlin Brandenburg Airport has halted all departures Thursday morning due to freezing rain, which has rendered aircraft de-icing impossible, an airport spokesperson confirmed.
The icy conditions have disrupted air travel in the German capital, although incoming flights initially remain unaffected. Passengers were advised to anticipate flight cancellations and significant delays, and to check directly with airlines for the latest updates. Officials warned that disruptions may continue until weather conditions improve.
Germany has been experiencing an extended cold spell from January into February, with Berlin seeing snow accumulation and temperatures plunging below -10°C (14°F). This severe winter weather has caused widespread travel chaos, particularly affecting trains.
As of 10:15 a.m. local time, no departures were recorded at Berlin Brandenburg Airport, according to Flightradar24. Overnight and morning snowfall, combined with freezing rain, has also impacted road and rail travel across eastern Germany.
The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued high-alert warnings for Berlin, cautioning residents about dangerously icy conditions and slippery surfaces.
