Belgium has announced a €100 million allocation to purchase American weapons for Ukraine, Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot confirmed during an EU foreign ministers’ meeting in Copenhagen.
Prévot said the Belgian government had agreed to provide the funds to strengthen Kyiv’s defenses against Russia’s ongoing invasion.
However, the minister underlined Belgium’s opposition to seizing frozen Russian assets, arguing they should be preserved as leverage in future negotiations.
He stressed that sovereign assets are protected under international law and warned that expropriation could destabilize Europe’s financial system, posing a broader risk to the EU’s economic security.
The decision highlights Belgium’s support for Ukraine while reflecting wider European divisions over how frozen Russian funds should be managed.
