Belgium has announced a new €1 billion military aid package for Ukraine during a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever on Tuesday.
President Zelensky expressed strong appreciation for Belgium’s ongoing support since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, according to a statement from the Ukrainian presidential office.
The Belgian Prime Minister confirmed that Belgium’s assistance covers military, political, and humanitarian support, including aid to Ukrainians currently living in Belgium.
He emphasized that the partnership between the two countries is built on a shared belief in justice and opposition to Russian aggression.
Zelensky thanked Belgium and Prime Minister De Wever for the newly announced defense aid package, underlining the importance of the €1 billion contribution. De Wever indicated that Belgium plans to provide a similar amount of military support to Ukraine every year.
During the visit, the Belgian Prime Minister was accompanied by representatives from ten Belgian defense companies.
Discussions focused on joint arms production and investment in Ukraine’s defense industry, aiming to strengthen Ukraine’s self-defense capabilities and better prepare Europe for potential future threats.
Belgium also reiterated its commitment to helping Ukraine enhance its air force capabilities, including ongoing work to secure the delivery of F-16 fighter jets. President Zelensky highlighted Belgium’s support for Ukraine’s application for European Union membership, stating that Ukraine’s inclusion would strengthen both the EU and NATO.
The leaders agreed on the importance of maintaining sanctions against Russia, emphasizing that sustained pressure is necessary to support Ukraine’s sovereignty and security.
