In a significant digital milestone, Lebanon has officially integrated "Google Transit" into Google Maps, marking the first time the country’s public transport data has been made available on the global platform.
The launch, announced by Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Works and Transport on Monday, allows users to plan their daily commutes using public transportation with unprecedented precision. The service provides detailed route information, bus lines, estimated departure and arrival times, and step-by-step navigation for commuters across the country.
Modernizing a Traditional System For years, public transport in Lebanon has relied heavily on oral tradition, experience, and informal knowledge of routes. The introduction of Google Transit signifies a shift toward a more transparent, organized, and accessible transport sector.
"This is a qualitative step toward organizing daily movement and facilitating the use of public transportation for all citizens," the Ministry stated. By digitizing transport schedules and routes, the government hopes to encourage more people to use buses and vans, potentially reducing traffic congestion in major cities like Beirut.
Digital Empowerment for Commuters The service is now live on the Google Maps app for both Android and iOS users. It is expected to be particularly beneficial for tourists and residents who were previously unfamiliar with the informal transport network.
As Lebanon continues to face economic challenges, the optimization of public transport through digital tools is seen as a cost-effective way to improve urban mobility and provide reliable data for future infrastructure planning.
