Residents of the Chinese capital, Beijing, celebrated the lifting of restrictions and the reopening of restaurants, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).

Since the beginning of May, bars, cafes, gyms, and museums have been closed in Beijing, as well as dozens of metro stations in the city of 22 million people, to cope with the outbreak of the COVID  pandemic.

Beijing recorded only dozens of daily infections with COVID, but like anywhere else in China, the municipality implemented a “zero COVID” strategy to limit the spread of the virus and deaths.

For weeks, residents of the Chinese capital were forced to undergo a PCR test at least every 48 hours, buildings were closed and people were quarantined.

But with the number of new infections gradually declining in Beijing (only two cases were announced on Tuesday), the authorities have now allowed residents to return to the office. Schools will reopen gradually, starting from June 13.
