Barcelona have been relegated to the UEFA Europa League after finishing third in the group stages of the Champions League. This comes on the back of their 3-0 defeat against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.
Barcelona could have gone through with favor from Dynamo Kyiv, had they won their outing against Benfica. Alas, the game finished 2-0 courtesy of a first-half double. Not much Mircea Lucescu’s men could do after that.
Barcelona have, in the past, participated in the second tier of European competitions before. The last time they played there was in 2003/04, though, and have not looked back since. In fact, they have not played in Europa League ever, after it was rebranded in 2009.
With the group stages of the UCL wrapped up (except Group F), the likes of RB Leipzig, Porto, Borussia Dortmund, Sheriff, Sevilla, and Zenit join Barça in relegation. One of Atalanta or Wolfsburg will have to climb down, too.
The draw for the Europa League round of 32 takes place on December 13, 2022, immediately after the Champions League round of 16.
