Marca made a survey showing that Barcelona's fans support Lionel Messi although he expressed his desire to leave the Camp Nou before announcing his resuming at the Balugrana.

The Argentinian captain had informed the club's management that he wanted to leave, but his €700 million release clause made it difficult to depart from Barca.

According to MARCA's survey, 51 percent of the people, participated in the survey backed the Argentinian captain.

"In total, 51 percent of MARCA's readers who participated in our survey believed Messi's comments in his interview with Goal," Marca reported.

"It is evident that Barcelona fans are more in favour of Messi than club president Josep Maria Bartomeu, with 82 percent of our readers being convinced that the 33-year-old had been telling Bartomeu that he wants to go, only for the president to renege on what he was saying at the time," the Spanish newspaper added.

Messi had confirmed on Friday that he will stay at Barcelona.

In exclusive statements to goal.com,"I thought and was sure that I was free to leave."

"The president always said that at the end of the season I could decide if I stayed or not," he added.

"Now they cling to the fact that I did not say it before 10 June, when it turns out that on 10 June we were competing for La Liga in the middle of this awful coronavirus and this disease altered all the season," Messi noted.

"And this is the reason why I am going to continue in the club," the Argentinian captain explained.

"Now I am going to continue in the club because the president told me that the only way to leave was to pay the 700m clause, and that this is impossible."
