The Lebanese judiciary arrested the former governor of the Central Bank Riad Salameh, on Tuesday, after questioning him regarding an embezzlement case, according to what a judicial source told AFP.
The source said that "the Public Prosecutor ordered the arrest of Salameh after questioning him for three hours regarding suspicions of embezzlement from the Central Bank of Lebanon exceeding $40 million."
This is the first time Salameh has appeared before the judiciary since the end of his term in July, 2023.
Salameh, 73, faces charges in Lebanon of committing financial crimes including money laundering, embezzlement and illicit enrichment, all of which he denies.
