Bangladesh’s interim Prime Minister, Mohammad Yunus, announced that the death toll from the powerful earthquake that hit the country on Friday jumped to at least 5, in addition to 100 injured.
Yunus expressed his shock and sorrow over the casualties caused by the 5.5-magnitude earthquake, according to a statement carried by Channel News Asia.
He explained that the government is taking all necessary measures, and emergency services are responding quickly to reports coming in from across the country, including the capital, Dhaka.
He added that they urge everyone to be cautious and not to pay attention to any kind of rumors or misinformation.
He added that further guidance will be provided through hotlines and official channels when necessary. We reaffirm our commitment to ensuring the safety of all citizens.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the earthquake’s epicenter was in the city of Narsingdi, about 33 kilometers from the capital, Dhaka, and the tremor lasted 26 seconds.
