Bahrain has been elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2026–2027 term, following a near-unanimous vote at the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.
The Kingdom received 186 out of 187 possible votes, securing 99.5 percent of the ballots cast. The outcome places Bahrain at the heart of global decision-making on peace and security for the two-year period beginning in January 2026.
Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Dr Abdullatif Al Zayani described the result as a major diplomatic achievement. He said the overwhelming vote reflected the international community’s confidence in Bahrain’s foreign policy, which is rooted in mutual respect, constructive cooperation, and positive engagement.
Al Zayani highlighted that this development is a clear recognition of Bahrain’s steadfast commitment to peace, stability, and multilateral cooperation. He reaffirmed the Kingdom’s intention to actively contribute to maintaining international peace and security through its upcoming role on the Council.
With global tensions on the rise, Bahrain has pledged to work collaboratively with all Council members and the wider UN membership. Al Zayani stated that Bahrain will uphold and promote the core values of the UN Charter and support multilateralism as a foundation for international cooperation.
He also emphasised that Bahrain’s approach during its Security Council tenure will be guided by principles such as dialogue, coexistence, mutual respect, and consensus-building.
The Kingdom aims to serve as a voice for diplomacy, a bridge for understanding, and a defender of solutions that align with the aspirations of people seeking peace, stability, and prosperity.
Al Zayani acknowledged the weight of the responsibility that comes with Security Council membership. He confirmed that Bahrain will participate in Council proceedings with dedication and sincerity, advocating for shared global values and principles.
Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs extended its congratulations to Bahrain, expressing confidence in its ability to represent the Arab group effectively and wishing it success in carrying out its responsibilities.
In a statement, the Ministry noted that Bahrain’s election reflects the international community’s trust in its ability to contribute meaningfully to global peace and security efforts.
