Badr Abdel Aaty: Egypt's New Foreign Minister with a Storied Career

Dr. Badr Abdel Aaty was sworn in today as Egypt's new Minister of Foreign Affairs, taking the oath before President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in the newly formed government of Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly.

Dr. Abdel Aaty's illustrious career in diplomacy, marked by professional excellence and unwavering patriotism, has seen him rise from a student at the Faculty of Economics and Political Science to the esteemed position of Foreign Minister and Minister of Migration in Egypt's "New Republic."

Throughout his diplomatic journey, Dr. Abdel Aaty has held numerous prominent positions. Most recently, he served as Egypt’s Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg, the European Union, and NATO from 2021 to 2024. Prior to that, he was Egypt’s Ambassador to Germany from 2015 to 2019.

He also served as Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for European Affairs until 2021 and was Deputy Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and Spokesperson for the Ministry from 2013 to 2015, pivotal years in Egypt's modern history. 

Dr. Abdel Aaty also held the position of Deputy Assistant Minister for European Union and Western Europe Affairs and National Coordinator for the Union for the Mediterranean between 2012 and 2013. From 2008 to 2012, he was Deputy Head of Mission at the Egyptian Embassy in Brussels.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Abdel Aaty was Director of Palestinian Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2007-2008), Counselor at the Egyptian Embassy in Washington D.C. (2003-2007), and handled African and Middle Eastern peace process affairs at the Minister's office (2001-2003). He also served in Tokyo (1997-2001) and as part of the regional economic cooperation office in the Middle East (1995-1997).

Dr. Abdel Aaty was a member of the Egyptian delegation at the Cairo Economic Conference for the Middle East and North Africa in 1996 and served at the Egyptian Embassy in Tel Aviv (1991-1995). 

His career began as a diplomatic attaché at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1989 to 1991. In 2003, he was a lecturer at the Nasser Academy for Military Sciences in Cairo and has authored several articles and publications on international politics.

During his tenure as Ambassador to Brussels, Dr. Abdel Aaty significantly strengthened cooperation and coordination with EU officials, elevating Egypt-EU relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership. 

As Ambassador to Germany, he contributed to substantial progress in bilateral relations, enhancing cooperation in various fields.

From 2013 to 2015, as the Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Abdel Aaty played a crucial role in defending the achievements of the June 30 Revolution, maintaining constant communication with both Egyptian and foreign media to highlight Egypt's developments during a critical period.

Born in 1966, Dr. Badr Abdel Aaty holds a Ph.D. in International Relations from the Faculty of Economics and Political Science, Cairo University (2003), a Master’s degree in International Relations (1996), and a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science (1987) from the same institution.
