Austria has recorded 26 fatalities from avalanches this winter, the Alpine Safety Board confirmed Thursday, marking a significant rise above the long-term average.
Between February 15 and 24 alone, 14 deaths were reported, highlighting a surge in avalanche-related incidents over recent weeks. The board noted that these events frequently occur under highly hazardous mountain conditions.
Authorities warned that despite repeated safety advisories, some individuals continue to ignore personal risk management measures, increasing their likelihood of being caught in avalanches.
The board urged all visitors to exercise extreme caution and to stay on marked safe slopes. Rescue operations can also impose substantial costs for victims or their families, as aerial rescue services, mountain rescue teams, and Alpine police typically charge fees for their assistance in Austria.
