Austria is experiencing its worst drought since 1885, with rainfall between January and June 2026 falling 27% below the long-term average, according to the country's meteorological authority, as an unprecedented heatwave grips the nation.

Climate experts said several regions are facing exceptionally severe drought conditions. Reports indicate that around 160 liters of additional rainfall per square meter would be needed in the coming weeks to offset this year's rainfall deficit.

State energy company Verbund, which operates hydropower plants along the Danube River, said the prolonged dry weather and reduced rainfall have significantly lowered river levels, cutting hydroelectric power generation by around 30% compared with the long-term average.

The low water levels have also disrupted navigation on the Danube, with some sections falling below the minimum depth required for shipping. The impact has been most severe in Lower Austria, Upper Austria and Salzburg.

Waterways operator Via Donau said the Danube's water level is currently about half a meter below the official minimum east of Vienna, forcing restrictions on river freight traffic. The company said the main cause is the ongoing lack of rainfall.
