Thousands of protesters in Austria temporarily blocked the Brenner motorway on Saturday, disrupting a major transport route linking Germany and Italy.
The demonstration was led by Karl Mohlsteiger, mayor of Gries am Brenner, as residents protested heavy traffic caused by trucks and tourists travelling through the narrow Wip Valley.
Around 3,000 people gathered on the motorway for a symbolic eight-hour closure, forcing vehicles to turn back. Protesters cited chronic congestion and pollution as long-standing concerns in the region.
Traffic disruptions were less severe than expected, with many drivers avoiding the route following advance warnings. Local media reported that trains operating alongside the motorway experienced heavy passenger demand during the protest.
