Austria is set to purchase 12 Italian-made M-346 FA fighter jets to replace its retired Saab 105 aircraft, Austrian newspaper Kronen Zeitung and French news site Zone Bourse reported.
The purchase agreement, which will be formalized in a letter of intent with Italy’s Ministry of Defence, is expected to be signed on Saturday.
The jets, produced by Italian aerospace company Leonardo, are intended for use in pilot training, supporting ground forces, and enhancing air defense capabilities.
While the total cost of the deal has not yet been disclosed, an estimated €1 billion (about $1.04 billion) has been allocated for the purchase.
This acquisition is part of Austria's ongoing efforts to modernize its military forces, ensuring that its air defense systems remain up-to-date and capable of addressing evolving threats.
