Austria has entered a new phase in autonomous mobility, moving from pilot projects to real-world deployment of self-driving vehicles as part of a nationwide strategy to modernize transport systems.
The initiative is led by the Austrian Institute of Technology in collaboration with government and industry partners. Officials confirmed that the program is transitioning from limited trials to operating integrated fleets of autonomous vehicles in everyday environments.
The shift follows more than a decade of research and development, involving 83 projects with total investment of approximately €63.5 million.
The new phase will see around 30 highly automated vehicles deployed, capable of operating independently without human intervention. The rollout is part of the “Roberta” project, which aims to introduce fully autonomous buses into public transport services.
Authorities say the move represents a major step toward large-scale adoption of self-driving technology, positioning Austria at the forefront of innovation in smart mobility and future transport solutions.
