A diplomatic and security crisis has escalated between Austria and the United States after Vienna accused US military aircraft of violating Austrian airspace without official authorization. This prompted the Austrian Air Force to scramble Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets to intercept them in two separate incidents within two days.
According to the Austrian Ministry of Defense, the Austrian Air Force scrambled two Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets on Sunday and Monday after radar detected US PC-12 aircraft flying within Austrian airspace without prior permission.
The ministry explained that the US aircraft are believed to be U-28A Draco aircraft belonging to the US Air Force Special Operations Command. These aircraft are used for intelligence, reconnaissance, and electronic surveillance missions.
