Austria is experiencing an exceptionally severe cold wave, with temperatures in several regions falling to record-breaking lows of minus 25.7 degrees Celsius, prompting authorities to issue an official warning for extreme and unusual winter conditions across large parts of the country.

According to the Austrian Institute for Climate and Meteorology, unusually low temperatures have been recorded in multiple towns across the Mühlviertel, Waldviertel and Ausserfern regions, spanning the federal states of Tyrol and Upper Austria. Meteorologists confirmed that these readings are far below seasonal averages and warned that the intense cold is expected to persist over the coming days.

Forecasts indicate that many cities and rural areas will continue to experience harsh, frost-heavy nights, while daytime temperatures are also expected to remain below freezing in most parts of Austria. The prolonged cold spell increases the risk of icy roads, frozen infrastructure and health complications, particularly for vulnerable populations.

A 24-hour extreme cold warning has been issued for several federal states, including Vorarlberg, Tyrol, Salzburg, Carinthia, Styria and Lower Austria. Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution, limit outdoor exposure, and take necessary preventive measures to protect against hypothermia and frost-related hazards.

The cold snap is being described as one of the most intense winter weather events in recent years, raising concerns over energy demand, transport disruptions and public safety. Officials continue to monitor the situation closely as Austria braces for further freezing conditions.
