Authorities in Austria have confirmed that a recalled baby food product was contaminated with rat poison, prompting an urgent public health warning and a cross-border investigation.
Police said laboratory tests on a seized jar of carrot and potato purée produced by HiPP returned positive results for toxic substances, following earlier concerns over possible tampering. The product had been recalled from more than 1,000 SPAR stores across Austria.
The contaminated sample involved a 190-gram jar reported by a customer. Authorities believe the poisoning may be linked to an extortion attempt targeting the supply chain.
Investigators have expanded the probe beyond Austria, with affected products also seized in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, while parallel inquiries continue in Germany.
Officials have warned consumers not to use the product and to exercise caution when handling any suspected jars. Indicators of tampering include damaged or previously opened lids and unusual labeling on the packaging.
Health authorities advise immediate handwashing after contact and stress that consumption of the affected product could be life-threatening.
HiPP stated that the contamination appears to be the result of deliberate criminal interference affecting distribution channels in Austria. Both HiPP and SPAR have offered full refunds for all recalled items.
