Austria has announced the appointment of its first Special Envoy to the Middle East, set to begin in January, as part of efforts to play a more active role in promoting stability in what it described as a crucial period for the region.
The Austrian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Arad Benko, currently the Chief of Staff at the ministry and a seasoned diplomat with over 25 years of experience, will assume the new role. The ministry highlighted that the Middle East remains a central focus of Austria’s foreign policy.
According to the statement, the envoy’s responsibilities will include strengthening relations with countries across the region, prioritizing peacebuilding and mediation initiatives, coordinating humanitarian aid with development and foreign policy efforts, and deepening economic cooperation.
The ministry explained that the decision to create this position reflects the highly dynamic developments unfolding in the Middle East.
It added that the fragile situation and ongoing diplomatic efforts surrounding the Gaza peace process underscore the urgent need for stronger international collaboration and sustained engagement.
