The residents of the largest city in Australia, Sydney, will have another week in lockdown due to the ongoing outbreak of the "Delta" variant, BBC reported on Wednesday.
The New South Wales government described the decision as "difficult," after recording 27 new COVID-19 infections, in addition to the shortage of vaccine supplies in the state.
The measures are supposed to be lifted on Friday, however, after the extinction, it will last until 16 July. They include a stay-at-home order, in addition to allowing people to leave their homes for buying essential goods or work for jobs that couldn't be done virtually.
Two weeks ago, the lockdown was announced by New South Wales state Premier Gladys Berejiklian included the regions of Blue Mountains, Central Coast, and Wollongong, which surround Sydney.
Australia recorded 31,000 cases and 910 deaths since the pandemic started in the state, and vaccinated less than 10% of its population.
