Australia has appointed Lieutenant General Susan Coyle as Chief of Army, marking the first time a woman has held the position in the country’s 125-year military history.

Coyle, who currently serves as Chief of Joint Capabilities, will assume the role in July, succeeding Simon Stuart.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the appointment as a landmark moment, confirming that Australia will soon have its first female army chief.

Defense Minister Richard Marles also called the move a historic milestone, highlighting its significance for the future of the armed forces.

The appointment comes as the Australian military intensifies efforts to increase the number of women in senior and officer roles, following years of criticism over systemic harassment and gender discrimination within the ranks.

Analysts say the decision reflects a broader shift toward diversity and inclusion in the Australian Defense Force, as it seeks to modernize its structure and improve workplace culture.
