U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin emphasized the need to work towards securing an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah for at least 21 days.
Austin clarified that the United States did not participate in the recent Israeli operation targeting Hezbollah’s headquarters, stating, "We had no prior warning. A call was made with Minister Gallant while the Israeli operation was already underway."
He continued, "This operation took place just a few hours ago, and they are still assessing the situation, so I have no further information or details at this time. As I've said many times, an all-out war must be avoided."
Austin added, "Diplomacy remains the best and quickest way forward, allowing displaced Israeli and Lebanese citizens to return to their homes on both sides of the border. We hope we can bring Israeli citizens back to their homes in the north."
He concluded by saying, "I will speak with Minister Gallant again soon and look forward to receiving an update from him when we have that conversation."
