World Humanitarian Day is observed on 19th August each year to commemorate the 2003 bomb attack on the UN headquarters at Canal Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq, which claimed the lives of 22 humanitarian workers, including the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello.
The day aims to promote the well-being, dignity, and survival of those affected by disasters, and to ensure the safety and security of aid workers who respond to such crises. It also serves as an opportunity to raise awareness and educate the public on global challenges and issues.
On this World Humanitarian Day, events have been organized worldwide to show solidarity and highlight the devastating impact of armed conflicts on humanitarian workers. Leaders of humanitarian organizations will also send a joint letter to the Member States of the UN General Assembly, urging the international community to stop attacks on civilians, protect aid workers, and hold perpetrators accountable.
