AU, Regional Leaders Convene in Conakry for Inauguration of President Mamadi Doumbouya

In a significant display of regional diplomacy, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, joined a prominent gathering of African heads of state in the Guinean capital today for the official inauguration of Mamadi Doumbouya as President of the Republic of Guinea.

The ceremony follows the conclusion of a high-stakes electoral process, marking what the African Union described in a statement as a pivotal step toward restoring constitutional governance and ensuring long-term peace and stability in the West African nation.

A Gathering of Continental Leaders The high-profile event was attended by several influential African presidents, highlighting the continent's commitment to Guinea's political transition. Notable attendees included:

Joseph Nyuma Boakai, President of Liberia

Bassirou Diomaye Faye, President of Senegal

Adama Barrow, President of Gambia

Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda

Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, President of Gabon

Nigeria was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who attended on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Regional and Institutional Support Beyond heads of state, the inauguration saw the participation of key institutional leaders, including the President of the African Development Bank Group. High-level representatives from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) were also present, underscoring a unified regional front in supporting Guinea’s new administration.

The presence of the African Union Commission Chairperson signifies the continental body's ongoing engagement with Guinea as it navigates its return to the constitutional fold. The AU statement emphasized that such regional cooperation is vital for fostering a secure environment conducive to development and democratic growth across the continent.
