In a powerful address during the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU), Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the Chairman of the AU Commission, delivered a poignant appeal for global action on Palestine, describing the suffering of its people as a "challenge to the world's conscience."

Speaking before African heads of state and government, Youssouf underscored the urgent need to end the violence in Palestinian territories. "Palestine and the suffering of its people constitute a profound challenge to our collective conscience," Youssouf stated during his closing remarks. "The genocide against these people must be brought to an immediate halt."

A Continent Grappling with Conflict

The AU Commission chief’s comments come at a time when the African continent itself is navigating a complex geopolitical landscape marked by instability. Youssouf highlighted ongoing crises in Sudan, the Sahel region, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and Somalia, noting that African citizens continue to pay a heavy price for institutional fragility and conflict.

"Our summit convenes within a geopolitical context characterized by crisis, both on our continent and globally," Youssouf remarked. He warned that the resurgence of unconstitutional changes in government—referring to recent coups—mirrors the "dark days" of the post-independence era.

Strategic Sovereignty and Agenda 2063

Beyond security concerns, Youssouf emphasized that Africa’s survival depends on accelerated political and economic integration. Amidst a global shift toward unilateralism and protectionism, he called for the continent to double its efforts in implementing "Agenda 2063," the AU's master plan for transforming Africa into a global powerhouse.

"Africa is part of the Global South, but it possesses its own distinct character and identity," he asserted. He argued that mobilizing domestic resources is no longer a choice but a necessity as external funding dries up.

Key Pillars for Growth: Energy, Water, and Agriculture

Aligning with this year’s summit theme of water and sanitation, Youssouf identified the modernization of agriculture and rapid industrialization as essential for the continent's prosperity. He noted that these goals are unattainable without significant investment in energy potential and high-performance infrastructure.

The speech concluded with a call for the AU to remain a "strong, independent, and prosperous" entity capable of advocating for its youth and civil society, who are increasingly demanding a seat at the table of global governance.
