Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, arrived in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, on his first official visit since assuming office.

His election took place during the African Union Summit of Heads of State and Government in February.

Upon his arrival at Aden Adde International Airport, Youssouf was received by Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama.

During his visit, he is scheduled to hold meetings with Somali President Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre to discuss key issues related to Somalia and the African Union, according to the Somali National News Agency (SONNA).

Mahmoud Ali Youssouf was elected as Chairperson of the African Union Commission in early February 2025 after a highly competitive race during the African Summit. His victory was backed by strong support from AU member states, recognizing his diplomatic expertise and ability to address complex African challenges.

His election marks a significant step toward strengthening cooperation among African nations, advancing conflict resolution efforts, and enhancing security across the continent.
