Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, has commended Egypt’s role in mediating a ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran.
He welcomed the temporary halt in hostilities, describing it as “an important step that reflects commendable leadership and a shared commitment to de-escalation.”
Youssouf noted that the development aligns with the African Union Commission’s consistent calls for restraint and the peaceful resolution of conflicts.
He also praised the constructive roles played by the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, as well as key mediators including the Sultanate of Oman, the Republic of Türkiye, and the Arab Republic of Egypt, whose diplomatic efforts helped achieve this outcome.
Youssouf added that “the repercussions have been felt globally, including across Africa, where disruptions in fuel supplies have driven up inflation and increased the cost of essential goods.”
