At least 66 people were injured on Monday after two trains collided in eastern Slovakia, causing a locomotive and a passenger carriage to derail, according to emergency services and police.
Authorities said the crash took place near a tunnel close to a village about 55 kilometers west of Košice, the country’s second-largest city.
Emergency officials confirmed that 16 people sustained moderate to serious injuries, while around 50 others were treated for minor wounds.
Videos shared by Slovak police on Facebook showed wrecked carriages and a derailed locomotive resting on a hillside near the crash site.
Slovak Railways reported that the collision occurred at a junction where multiple tracks merge into a single line.
An investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the accident and the circumstances leading up to it.
