At Least 6 Killed, 14 Missing in Tehran Landslide (VIDEO)

A landslide triggered by heavy rains near Tehran, capital of Iran, left six people dead and 14 believed missing, state-run media reported on Thursday.

State TV reported that the heavy rains caused flash floods and then landslides in a neighborhood at the foothills of the Alborz mountain range.

Rescue teams were deployed at the scene, and nine people were also wounded in the incident. Media reports revealed that Imamzadeh Davood, a religious shrine, was also damaged.

The state-run IRNA news agency pointed out that rescue operations were still underway at the site, with rescue workers struggling to find at least 14 people missing after the landslide.

Furthermore, IRNA indicated that 18 out of Iran’s 31 provinces, have been are affected by floods uptill now.

Meanwhile, the semi-official ISNA news agency stated that five people were killed in the southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchistan while one person died in the town of Rudehen, east of Tehran.

Authorities had earlier warned residents of Tehran’s mountainous areas about heavy rains and possible floods.

Last Saturday, more than 21 people were killed due to flash floods in Iran’s drought-stricken southern Fars province.

“Twenty-one people were killed and two are still missing,” in the floods that affected several towns in and around Estahban county in the southern province of Fars, Hossein Darvishi, provincial head of the Red Crescent Society, was quoted as saying by state TV.

Heavy rains swelled the Roudbal river by the city of Estahban, according to the city’s governor Yousef Karegar. Karegar said rescue teams saved around 55 people who were trapped by the flash flooding, adding that at least six people were still missing.
