At least 55 people died due to heavy rainfall and landslides that have struck regions in Bangladesh over the past two weeks, affecting the lives of over a million people.

Officials reported this alarming situation on Sunday, underscoring the severity of the situation.

Starting from August 1st, floods and landslides have caused fatalities across various regions. Cox's Bazar witnessed the demise of 21 people, while Chittagong mourned the loss of 19 lives.

Additionally, Bandarban recorded 10 casualties, and Rangamati reported five, as announced by local authorities in these four highly affected areas.

Azizur Rahman, an official from the Bangladeshi Meteorological Department, emphasized that these rainfall amounts are "among the heaviest in recent years." He elaborated that the precipitation on August 7th alone reached a staggering 312 millimeters.

The heavy rainfall persisted until August 11th, leading to widespread flooding. Rivers overflowed their banks, inundating hundreds of villages and displacing numerous families.

The South Asian region typically experiences around 80% of its annual precipitation during the monsoon season, resulting in fatalities due to floods and landslides.

These natural disasters are a recurring challenge for the region.
