Gunmen killed at least 52 people and displaced around 2,000 others during a series of attacks over several days in Nigeria’s Plateau State, authorities announced.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said the full extent of the violence became clear over the weekend, confirming 52 deaths and 22 people hospitalized.

In a statement released on Sunday, the agency described the attacks as brutal and said they caused widespread destruction of property.

More than 1,820 people have been displaced, and three camps for displaced persons have been established to shelter them, according to NEMA.

The agency also reported that the security situation in the area remains tense.

The Nigerian presidency stated that President Bola Tinubu has ordered security forces to track down the attackers and warned that they would face severe punishment.

The motive behind the attacks, which targeted six villages in the Bokkos area of Plateau State, remains unclear.

However, the violence marks the deadliest incident in the region since December 2023, when over 100 people were killed in similar attacks.

Plateau State has experienced frequent clashes in the past, often between farmers and cattle herders competing for land and resources.
