The bodies of at least 46 illegal migrants, were found in a truck in San Antonio, Texas, on Monday, US authorities reported.

Charlie Hood, a firefighting chief in San Antonio, a city located 240 km from the border with Mexico, said during a press conference, that the ambulance teams also transported 16 injured people, including 12 adults and 4 children.

He noted that all of the injured were "conscious" when they were transferred to receive the necessary health care.

Although trucks are a primary means of smuggling clandestine migrants from Mexico to the US, the journey is often perilous as these vehicles are rarely air-conditioned, and the water bottles that migrants often do not have enough to make the entire journey.

According to the San Antonio fire chief, the survivors who were taken to hospitals he "hot to the touch" and suffering from heat stroke and heat exhaustion, and no water was found in the truck.

Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard expressed his regret over this "tragedy", pointing out that the Mexican consul was on his way to San Antonio although he did not know the nationalities of the victims.

The governor of Texas, Greg Abbott was quick to blame Democratic President Joe Biden for this tragedy.

"These deaths are on Biden. They are a result of his deadly open border policies. They show the deadly consequences of his refusal to enforce the law," Abbott wrote on Twitter.

Since Biden came to power in early 2021, the number of illegal migrants infiltrating the US has increased, despite the fact that the Democratic president sought to stop this phenomenon by assigning his deputy, Kamala Harris, this thorny file.

In 2017, a car park near San Antonio witnessed a similar tragedy, but the outcome was much lower, as ten migrants spent the day in a trailer parked in the scorching sun.
