At least 28 people were killed and others injured when a bus plunged into a ravine in Ethiopia's northern Amhara region, the state-run Amhara Media Foundation reported Monday, citing local police.

The bus was traveling from Dessie to the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, when it veered off the road and fell into the ravine, resulting in the high number of casualties, according to Reuters.

The foundation quoted police as saying that "28 people have lost their lives so far, while a large number of passengers sustained minor to serious injuries," adding that rescue teams and other relevant authorities were continuing their operations at the scene.
