A devastating fire at a dollar store in northwestern Mexico has left at least 23 people dead and 11 others injured, authorities confirmed late on Saturday.
The blaze broke out at a Waldo’s discount store in the city of Hermosillo, Sonora State. Governor Alfonso Durazo said among the victims were several minors. He ordered a full investigation to determine the cause of the fire and identify those responsible.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her condolences to the victims’ families on social media, while local media reported that an explosion may have preceded the fire.
Witnesses told Milenio TV that the power went out just before a loud explosion was heard. The Sonora State Attorney General’s Office is investigating the incident but has ruled out foul play or an intentional attack.
