At least 20 people have tragically lost their lives, with 70 others injured in a landslide disaster that occurred in the Hanang region in northern Tanzania.

The incident was triggered by heavy rains, causing a landslide on Mount Hanang, which resulted in the fall of rocks, trees, and the destruction of homes.

The Hanang region commissioner, Janeth Mayanja, stated, "Heavy rains led to a landslide on Mount Hanang, causing rocks and trees to fall and homes of residents to be destroyed."

This catastrophic event has left a devastating impact on the local community.

Tanzania's meteorological agency had issued warnings that some areas might experience flooding during the rainy season until the end of December due to the El Niño phenomenon.

Tanzanian President Samia Hassan expressed her deep shock at the incident in a recorded message posted by the Ministry of Health on the internet.

She emphasized that they were deeply saddened by what had happened and ordered security agencies, the Ministry of Health, and other relevant authorities to make every effort in the search and rescue operations.

The president revealed that over 20 people lost their lives in the village of Katish in the Hanang region of Manyara. The government is mobilizing resources and support to aid the affected individuals and communities.
