Twin explosions caused by improvised explosive devices injured at least 18 people, including four Interior Ministry personnel, near Syria's Ministry of Tourism in central Damascus on Monday, authorities said, in the latest security incident to hit the capital amid heightened regional tensions.

According to Syria's Interior and Health ministries, the majority of the injuries occurred during the second blast as first responders and security personnel were assisting victims of the initial explosion.

The explosions occurred near the Ministry of Tourism and the Semiramis Hotel, less than one kilometre from the site of another blast in the al-Nasr Street area several days earlier, according to Al Qahera News.

Security officials said preliminary investigations indicated that the explosions were caused by improvised explosive devices, with one bomb concealed in a rubbish bin and another inside a vehicle. Authorities have not identified those responsible, and no group has claimed responsibility.

The blasts took place as French President Emmanuel Macron was visiting Damascus, although Syrian authorities have not suggested any connection between the visit and the attack.

Security forces cordoned off the area and deployed counterterrorism units, bomb disposal teams and police dogs to search for additional explosives, while forensic investigators examined the scene. Traffic was restricted to authorized vehicles as the investigation continued.

Earlier reports had indicated at least six injuries, with unconfirmed reports of one fatality. However, updated figures released by the Interior and Health ministries put the number of injured at 18, including four members of the Interior Ministry.

Authorities said investigations into the incident are ongoing, and no further details have been released.
