A cargo train collided with a passenger train just outside the Bangladeshi capital on Monday. Tragically, at least 15 people died, with numerous others sustaining injuries, according to fire officials.
The collision unfolded at around 3:30 p.m. local time in Bhairab, situated within the central district of Kishoreganj.
Rescue efforts swiftly mobilized, with both emergency responders and local residents working together to extricate passengers from the mangled train cars, according to fire official Mosharraf Hossain.
Regrettably, the number of casualties may rise further as the situation unfolds. Mosharraf Hossain noted, "Our people are working there. It's a chaotic situation," underlining the complexity of the rescue operation.
The collision involved two rear coaches of the Dhaka-bound Egarosindur Godhuli Express passenger train and a cargo train en route to Chattogram, as described by Azizul Haque Rajon, a senior fire official at the scene.
Details regarding the passengers potentially still trapped within the wreckage remain unclear. In the wake of this tragic incident, train services to other regions of the country have been temporarily suspended.
As the investigation continues, the exact cause of the collision remains unknown.
Train accidents are unfortunately all too common in Bangladesh, often attributed to factors such as unsupervised railway crossings, inadequate signaling, and suboptimal track conditions.
