Astronaut Jeremy Hansen revealed that the crew of Artemis II has proposed naming two previously unnamed craters on the Moon, combining scientific exploration with deeply personal tribute.
The first crater was suggested to be named “Integrity,” after the crew’s Orion spacecraft capsule. According to Hansen, the feature lies between the Orientale basin and the Ohm crater on the Moon’s far side.
Hansen described the location as roughly midway between the two landmarks, proposing the name as a symbolic reflection of the mission’s values and identity.
In a more poignant moment, Hansen announced a second naming proposal in honor of Reid Wiseman’s late wife, Carroll Wiseman, who passed away in 2020.
The crew suggested naming a bright lunar feature “Carroll,” located near the boundary between the Moon’s near side and far side, an area that can occasionally be seen from Earth depending on the Moon’s position.
Hansen’s voice reportedly broke as he delivered the dedication, describing the site as a “bright spot on the Moon.” The emotional moment resonated across the crew, with Wiseman and fellow astronaut Christina Koch visibly moved.
Following the announcement, the astronauts embraced as Mission Control acknowledged the proposed names, marking a rare and heartfelt moment during the historic mission.
The gesture highlights the human side of space exploration, where scientific milestones are intertwined with personal stories, remembrance, and the enduring bonds between those on Earth and those venturing beyond it.
