Vahagn Khachaturian, President of Armenia, in a discussion with Al‑Ahram, affirmed the “exceptional and historically unique” relationship between Armenia and Egypt, emphasising Egypt’s role as a “paramount” state in the region.

Khachaturian noted that the bilateral ties have accelerated following recent high-level visits, including Abdel Fattah El‑Sisi’s landmark trip to Yerevan in January 2023 — the first ever by an Egyptian president to Armenia. He highlighted the subsequent official visit to Cairo by Nikol Pashinyan, Armenia’s Prime Minister, in March 2024, and the recent presence of the Armenian president at the inauguration of the Grand Egyptian Museum.

According to Khachaturian, Egypt’s welcoming of thousands of Armenian refugees and migrants over decades forms a strong cultural and social bond between the two nations, reinforcing that their “friendship is more than words; it is action.” He described the persistent diplomatic coordination in regional forums, while expressing Armenia’s appreciation for Egypt’s efforts in regional peace and stability.

Looking ahead, he identified cooperation opportunities in agriculture, advanced technologies, tourism and transport, and underlined the need to remove obstacles such as the absence of direct flights between Cairo and Yerevan. Khachaturian reaffirmed that Egypt’s long-standing tradition of mediation and peaceful neighbourly relations deeply resonates with Armenia’s own regional vision.
