Armenia’s “Armath” robotics team has returned home victorious after clinching first place in the junior category of the 2025 World Robot Olympiad Open Championship, one of the world’s most prestigious robotics competitions.
The team, representing the Armath engineering laboratories of Aygut village school in Gegharkunik region and Yerevan School No. 131, scored 162 points, surpassing Romania’s “3 Ways of Garbage” and Germany’s “JT-Innovators,” who took second and third place respectively.
The winning group included Ararat Bayanduryan and Grigor Khojayan from Aygut school, alongside Vahe Gabrielyan from Yerevan School No. 131. They were coached and led by Shahen Arabachyan.
Their award-winning project featured a robotic device designed to detect leaks in gas pipelines, a solution that drew high praise from judges for its innovation and real-world application.
This year’s Olympiad brought together 214 teams from 44 countries, following a rigorous two-stage selection process. National contests, organized in Armenia by Contest Lab, determine which teams advance to the global round.
The champions were welcomed at Yerevan’s airport by leaders of the Union of Advanced Technology Enterprises (UATE), headed by CEO Sargis Karapetyan.
Launched in 2011, the Armath program is Armenia’s flagship initiative for non-formal engineering education and a cornerstone of UATE’s work. With support from the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, it now operates about 630 engineering laboratories nationwide, reaching nearly every second school. Today, Armath stands as the country’s largest public–private partnership, nurturing the next generation of Armenian innovators.
