Armenian President Armen Sargsyan declared Tuesday that early parliamentary elections must be held in the country. The president called for the handover of power to a government of national accord until elections are held.
Sargsyan said that given the current situation and the need to exit it with dignity and listen to the demands of society, it is clear that in order to protect the country from unrest, early elections for the General Assembly (Parliament) will be inevitable.
The president called on the current government to draw up a road map that includes a timetable for launching the constitutional measures. He indicated that this will allow early elections to take place.
It is noteworthy that Armenia is witnessing widespread protests, calling for the resignation of Nikol Pashinyan's government, following his signing of an agreement on stopping hostilities in the Karabakh region. The opposition forces considered this agreement a betrayal of the country's interests.
The agreement was signed by Russia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan for a ceasefire from November 10 and the deployment of Russian peacekeepers at the line of contact.
The agreement stipulates that the forces of the two conflicting parties to keep the sites where they were on November 10 and to hand over some areas adjacent to Karabakh to Azerbaijan to Armenia.
