Armenian PM, Merkel Discuss Situation in Nagorno-Karabakh

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan discussed, in a phone call Monday, the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, urging her to influence Turkey’s position on that matter to stop its interference.

“Pashinyan informed the German chancellor about the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, expressing his concern over the hostilities there,” a press service of the Armenian government said on Monday.

On her part, Merkel expressed her concern over the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, stressing that there is no solution but a peaceful one to this conflict. She also stressed the necessity to resume talks within the OSCE Minsk Group.

the Armenian Ministry of Defense, in a statement Monday, said that fighting with Azerbaijani forces continued throughout the night and in the morning over the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh

For its part, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said that Armenian forces opened fire at the town of Teter in Azerbaijan.

The region in South Caucasus is witnessing a major military escalation following violating ceasefire agreements between Yerevan and Baku, resulting in casualties.

Meanwhile, Shushan Stepanyan, the official spokesperson for the Armenian Ministry of Defense, confirmed that there are Syrian mercenaries sent by Turkey to fight alongside with the Azerbaijani forces.

In statement to Al Arabiya channel, Stepanyan added that there are about 4,000 Syrian mercenaries supporting Ankara in the military offensive alongside with the Azerbaijani army since Sunday morning.
