Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance signed a landmark joint statement on Monday, signaling the conclusion of negotiations for a comprehensive peaceful nuclear cooperation agreement between the two nations.
The signing took place during Vice President Vance's official visit to Yerevan, a move aimed at solidifying the "Washington Peace Agreement" reached in August 2025 and exploring the next phase of the Armenia-U.S. strategic partnership.
A New Chapter in Energy Security In statements following the meeting, Prime Minister Pashinyan hailed the agreement as the start of a "new chapter" in deepening energy ties between Washington and Yerevan. He emphasized that the partnership would play a critical role in diversifying Armenia’s energy sources by introducing innovative and safe nuclear technologies.
"This agreement is a testament to the deepening strategic partnership between our two countries," Pashinyan stated, according to the official Armenpress news agency. He expressed deep gratitude for the United States' "unwavering support" and reaffirmed Armenia’s readiness to expand bilateral cooperation across all sectors.
Strengthening Strategic Ties Vice President Vance's visit underscores the growing importance of the South Caucasus in U.S. foreign policy. Beyond energy, the discussions focused on regional stability and the implementation of existing peace frameworks. The nuclear agreement is viewed by experts as a significant step toward Armenian energy independence, reducing reliance on traditional regional suppliers while adhering to international safety and non-proliferation standards.
As both nations move toward the formal implementation of the pact, the focus will shift to technical exchanges and the deployment of advanced U.S. nuclear technology to modernize Armenia’s aging energy infrastructure.
