Argentinian President Javier Milei was attacked during a campaign rally on Wednesday when his motorcade came under a barrage of stones, plants, and bottles in Buenos Aires province.

The libertarian leader, who is campaigning ahead of October’s midterm elections, was riding in the back of a pickup truck to greet supporters in Lomas de Zamora, 20 kilometers south of the capital.

As his convoy advanced, protesters hurled projectiles at the vehicle, forcing security to intervene and abruptly cut the event short.

Presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni confirmed that Milei escaped uninjured. His sister and close adviser, Karina Milei, along with other officials, were also present in the caravan before it quickly departed the scene.

The incident intensified political tensions just days before key provincial elections in Buenos Aires, and as Milei seeks to strengthen his position two years into his presidency, which has been marked by radical economic reforms aimed at tackling Argentina’s chronic fiscal deficit and runaway inflation.

Witnesses reported violent clashes between Milei’s supporters and opponents following the assault. A female supporter sustained rib injuries and was taken to hospital by ambulance.

The attack came minutes after Milei addressed an ongoing scandal involving leaked recordings by Diego Spagnuolo, former head of the national disability agency. The tapes suggested that funds intended for people with disabilities were diverted to Karina Milei, further fueling controversy around the president’s inner circle.
