Argentine President Javier Milei has announced the country’s withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO), citing deep disagreements over health governance and the political influence of certain countries.
During a press conference, presidential spokesperson Manuel Adorni confirmed that Milei has instructed Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthin to formally begin the withdrawal process.
He emphasized that Argentina will not allow an international organization to interfere in its sovereignty or healthcare policies.
Adorni criticized the handling of health crises, particularly the COVID-19 pandemic, which he claimed led to the longest lockdown in human history under former President Alberto Fernández. He also pointed to a lack of independence in decision-making due to political pressures from influential nations.
The withdrawal, according to Adorni, will provide Argentina with greater flexibility in shaping health policies, significant cost savings, and a stronger commitment to national sovereignty in public health matters.
