Argentine President Javier Milei has officially declared that Argentina will move its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in 2026, marking a major shift in the country’s foreign policy stance.
Speaking before the Israeli Knesset during his second official visit to Israel, Milei stated,
"It is an honor to announce that in 2026, the transfer of our embassy to West Jerusalem will take effect."
Argentina’s embassy is currently located near Tel Aviv, aligning with the international consensus that refrains from recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital until a negotiated peace agreement with the Palestinians is reached.
Only a few countries, the United States, Paraguay, Guatemala, Honduras, Kosovo, and Papua New Guinea, have embassies in Jerusalem, defying that consensus.
The status of Jerusalem remains one of the most contentious issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Israel captured East Jerusalem in the 1967 Six-Day War and later annexed it, a move not recognized by the broader international community.
Palestinians view East Jerusalem as the future capital of a potential independent state.
