Archaeologists have uncovered what is believed to be the oldest-known cave art in the world in a limestone cave on Muna Island, Indonesia, according to a report by TV BRICS.

The prehistoric artwork has been dated back approximately 67,800 years, reshaping understanding of early human artistic expression and symbolic behavior.

The discovery was made in the Liang Metanduno cave in Southeast Sulawesi, where researchers identified hand stencils on the cave walls that predate previously known cave art by thousands of years. Using uranium-series dating techniques on mineral deposits that formed over the pigment, scientists confirmed the remarkable age of the art.

The findings support theories that early humans possessed advanced cognitive and cultural abilities much earlier than once thought. The artwork’s age also aligns with hypotheses about early human migration out of Africa and across maritime routes into Southeast Asia and beyond.

Experts have described the site as a key piece in the puzzle of prehistoric human creativity and cultural development. The discovery underscores Indonesia’s critical role in the story of human evolution and artistic heritage.
