The Arab Parliament (PA) condemned, on Monday, statements by the spokesperson of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that were deemed offensive to Prophet Mohammed.

In a statement, the Arab Parliament stressed the need to stop irresponsible remarks that offend the symbols and sanctities of true Islam, affirming that these perpetrators must be held accountable to make sure that such violations will not be repeated.

"Such statements reflect a clear ignorance of Islam's message of peace and its great role in spreading the values of tolerance as well as confronting racism and extremism," the parliament noted, emphasizing its full rejection of insulting all religious' symbols and sanctities.

Moreover, it added that these offensive remarks contradict the interreligious dialogues and lead to a state of tension and hatred between religions, wondering how such statements are issued by political officials who are supposed to be keen on spreading the values of moderation, tolerance, and dialogue among religions and civilizations.

The AP also stressed the necessity of realizing the great difference between freedom of expression and respect for the other’s beliefs, reiterating that in no case can be accepted that religions and their sacred symbols are abused under the claims of freedom of opinion and expression.

On Saturday, the Indian official posted on his Twitter account a controversial tweet about the Prophet Muhammad’s marriage to Aisha, which sparked anger and widespread criticism among the pioneers of social networking sites, especially in Arab countries.

Activists criticized the escalation of hatred against Islam and Muslims in India, highlighting Modi’s racist policy against Muslims.

The International Organization for Supporting the Prophet of Islam said in a tweet on its Twitter account: “The spokesman for the ruling party in India, Bharatiya Janata, insults the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace.”
