Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit warned Monday that Israel is seeking to “bury the Palestinian state project” through destruction and displacement in Gaza, and called on the international community to act decisively to safeguard the two-state solution.

Speaking before a high-level international conference on the peaceful settlement of the Palestinian question at the UN General Assembly hall, Aboul Gheit praised Saudi Arabia and France for co-sponsoring the meeting. He said the gathering represents not only an effort to preserve a Palestinian state, but also to “save some of our shared humanity” in the face of “barbarism and hatred.”

Aboul Gheit reminded delegates that Israel was created by a UN resolution and said the time has come to “return history to its rightful path” by establishing a Palestinian state alongside Israel. He hailed the growing number of countries recognizing Palestine, describing the momentum as “irreversible.”

But he cautioned that Israel aims to render such recognition symbolic while entrenching occupation, expanding settlements, and pursuing “systematic killing in Gaza with the aim of annihilation.” He urged states that recognize Palestine to also protect its people and shield the project from punitive measures that could undermine the future of peace
